The Story Behind Ethos Publishing Consulting

I started my career in academic publishing back in 2007 and over the years I have worked my way up to senior leadership roles, learning so much about the industry as I have progressed. I have been lucky enough to have had a varied career working for Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Nelson Thornes, Oxford University Press and The Policy Press, as well as carrying out consulting work for other organisations.

I founded Ethos Publishing Consulting because I felt that the research communications landscape had become so complex that authors, academic institutions and publishers were finding it difficult to navigate the pace of change. After nearly 20 years working in the research communications industry, I felt it was the right time to utilise the skills that I had gained to help others reach their full potential.

In a relatively short space of time, I have seen a huge amount of change in research communications and much of this change is influenced by external policy. Publishers, academic institutions and authors have had to adapt to a changing landscape, and this has been challenging for all stakeholders. Whilst navigating these challenges I have learnt a lot about collaboration, about being open to the viewpoints of others and about creating policies that focus on sustainability and equity.

I believe in the power of ethical publishing practices which is why Ethos Publishing Consulting is focused on driving forward more ethical publishing policies that truly benefit society. Before I started this company, I took some time out to return to education and learn more about public policy and how this affects society. I discovered that the purpose of good public policy is to benefit society as a whole and I believe that scholarly publishers have a responsibility to ensure that their policies benefit society too.

If you have a similar ethos, then Ethos Publishing Consulting may be the right partner for your next project.

"I had the pleasure of working with Leila on the Open Research team at Wiley for close to two years. During that time, she impressed me with her exceptional organizational and project management skills which she applied to many high-level projects, implementing policy change across the company. Leila led by example, encouraging a culture of collaboration with individual colleagues and across cross-functional teams. She cares deeply about the research enterprise and takes a creative approach to outreach and engagement.

Leila has my full endorsement and unqualified recommendation; I would recommend her in a heartbeat!”
